The Orchard Park Starz 10U coaching staff is fully committed to a rewarding and fun softball experience. All players and parents should be prepared to commit to a winter and summer schedule. The kids will learn and have a good time as we will keep them all involved!
During the off-season we will practice...
- 4-5 x per month December through February
- 10 x per month in March & April
Pitchers are encouraged to have private lessons. Experience tells us that it takes 8 months of pitching with privates lessons along with repetition to become a competitive pitcher. We will have 30 min prior to our regular practices to work on pitching. We will also have 1 extra gym time per week for your use. I encourage all players to learn the fundamentals of pitching, Even if you do not have no intentions of pitching on travel, this knowledge will help you on your house teams.
Winter practices will be held at either local OP gyms or at The Sahlen's Sports Complex. We are also looking into getting The Buffalo Bills Field House as a possible practice destination. We also plan on scheduling periodic winter scrimmage games at Sahlen's Sports Park against other local teams that have expressed an interest in doing so.
Practices will focus on fundamentals, team concepts and having fun. We understand that players will not make all practices BUT failure to attend practices on a regular basis without proper notification and/or reasonable excuses may result in the player being removed from the team.
The tentative plans for the 2008 season will be...
- 3-4 scrimmage game March/ April
- Games start in May
- 14 league games
- 1 practice per week depending on density of the schedule
- 1 or 2 local softball tournaments to be determined
- 1 out of town softball tournament - depending on our schedule
The coaching philosophy we will follow...
- Players will be rotated in all positions to best utilize their abilities, all players will play a minimum of 2 innings in the infield as long as team commitments are followed.
- All players will bat throughout the entire game - no substitutions
- A team concept will be followed
- Coordinated pre-game and practice drills will be defined
- Parents and friends should provide positive encouragement and support.
